Venezuela’s acting leader tells the United Nations that elections are coming, without saying when.
Delcy Rodriguez, who became Venezuela’s acting president after a U.S. military operation removed Nicolas Maduro from power in January 2026, addressed the UN General Assembly for the first time on September 23. She said elections would be held and that her government had begun talks with opposition leaders, though she gave no date for a vote.
Rodriguez also thanked President Trump for his willingness to restore ties after the operation that removed her predecessor, and the two briefly met to discuss restructuring Venezuela’s sovereign debt. Critics note the irony of a leader installed after foreign intervention now being the one who must decide when democracy returns.
